Composed and Performed by Chris Grabau

Inspired by the Kan Yasuda sculpture

I think Kan Yasuda’s “Door of Return” is one of the most fascinating pieces in the whole collection. While the sculpture slightly resembles something out of “War of the Worlds,” it is a piece that invites the viewer to walk underneath its all-seeing eye and proceed through to the other side.

Moving through the sculpture only offers a slight change in perspective but maybe that’s the point. While the purpose of the door is unclear, the act of movement itself creates a change in place and time. It begs to question - are we using the door to return to another place or does the door provide an opportunity to return from a place. Either way, the movement through the door links both uses together.

With that in mind, I tried to create a piece that communicated a sort of transformational change. The piece is actually two parts. One is a mechanistic sound collage of squeaking cymbals, organ swells, and ebow strings. The other is a simple piano piece. When linked together, both pieces create a sense of movement in both tone and emotion. To some ears the change may sound beautiful, to others it may be numbing and inconsequential - either way, once hearing the resolve of the piece, a change has occurred and both pieces are forever linked.
